چکیده

The testis is a complex organ consisting of a variety of cells such as germinal cells, Leydig cells, Myoid cells and Sertoli cells. It is the Sertoli cells which are essential in deLarmnrng sperm number and sperm development. The number of Sertoli cells is governed during neonatal development by the adon of homones such as follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and oesbogen [ 11. One hypothesis is that phenolic antioxidants / plasticising agents, which are prevalent in our environment could be mimicking oestrogeas, which in tun^ could be affecting satoli cell development. There appears to be some evidence for this as commonly occurring phenolic agents such as aonylphenol and bisphenol A can bind to oestrogen rrceptors I2.31. An alternative possibility which we are presently investigating is that -+phenolic ts could also be inhibiting intracellular Ca pumps (&R-ATpaseS), w y t

Heat shock protein 70 protects motor neuronal cells expressing mutant Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) against altered calcium homeostasis

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive loss of motor neurons leading to paralysis and death. Mutations of the human Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) are found in some cases of familial ALS (fALS). Recent evidences suggest the accumulation of intracellular calcium is one of the primary mechanisms of motor neuronal degeneration. In th...

Time course of dysregulation of calcium homeostasis in acutely isolated CA1 hippocampal pyramidal neurons after pilocarpine-induced Status Epilepticus

Glutamate induces excitotoxic damage to hippocampal pyramidal neurons in Status Epilepticus (SE) and epilepsy. In this study, we investigated time course of dysregulation of calcium homeostasis at various intervals after an episode of SE in acutely isolated CA1hippocampal pyramidal. For this purpose, male Sprague-Dawley rats (200 g) were subjected to pilocarpine-induced SE. The SE was blocked a...

FAD Mutations in Amyloid Precursor Protein Do Not Directly Perturb Intracellular Calcium Homeostasis

Disturbances in intracellular calcium homeostasis are likely prominent and causative factors leading to neuronal cell death in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Familial AD (FAD) is early-onset and exhibits autosomal dominant inheritance. FAD-linked mutations have been found in the genes encoding the presenilins and amyloid precursor protein (APP). Several studies have shown that mutated presenilin pro...
